Ode to a Paper Clip

unjammer of Macs

unclogger of Elmer's

emergency orange stick

more elegant organization tool than

say the ubiquitous

vanilla manilla

folder

tie on some string and

presto! an impromptu

feline amusement

or earthworm dangler

if you fancy fish

for dinner

when I see a stray one

even a slighty rusty one

along the curb

I bend to

rescue it

take it home

to my desk

where it can live

with the others.

Avery Caswell is temporarily living in Baltimore, Maryland, although BuzzFeed quizzes suggest her place of residence should be Barcelona. She prefers cats, wishes she had a greener thumb, loves a good Martha Grimes mystery and hates snow. Avery was the lead author for LUCK, A Collection of Facts, Fiction, Incantations & Verse, and is currently completing her second novel, Conjure Silver.
