They traverse the landscape
like a caravan of camels
crossing a desert,
a procession of twelve, heads held high,
moving steadily and sedately
through the woods and weeds,
not headed for a caravanserai
but for the corn
my neighbor scattered
beneath a large maple,
where they break ranks and revert to being
a flock of turkeys, pecking, pecking.

Phyllis Wax writes in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan.  A lover of warm weather, she watches the snow come and go, waiting and hoping for spring. From the window in front of her desk, she observes an abundance of migrating birds, several generations of turkeys, and the occasional fox, deer, and raccoon. Some of those make their way into her poetry. Phyllis has read her poems on the radio, in coffee shops, in libraries and bars, and her work has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies.

I love this poem, Phyllis. (Alessa here) You have truly captured exactly how the turkeys appear near the woods by our condos. Inspired comparison with camels.

We have some wild turkeys on our island (no one knows how they got here), and they are better citizens than many of the human residents! They understand crosswalks and use them, and they don't make loud noises too early or too late in the day!

I always liked Colorado high country wild turkeys. Fun to watch. Great accounting of how they travel.
