A Tangent Upon the Pronunciation of a Particular French Word

"Buerr-seh," she said,
rolling her r's ever so slightly
and swallowing the final tasty syllable.
"It's pronounced, Buerr-seh.  It is
            a very popular cheese."
— Ah, oui, fromage . . . and
having thus exhausted most of my French,
I lop off a big chunk of
            boursin
stirring it into the steaming pasta,
rolling it 'round the rotini,
creating a macaroni et fromage
that draws a throaty purring
from behind her closed
but perfectly enunciated eyes.

Daniel Budd is a retired Unitarian minister in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. He has been reading and writing poetry since finding W.H. Auden's "Like Love" torn out of a paperback and lying on the floor of his high school cafeteria. Daniel is very appreciative of the time he has now to read and write more.
