Morton Torkleson
by
Mark Lane

Morton Torkleson found that he was beside himself one day,
“Are you out of you mind?” He asked himself without an instant of delay.

“Why would you ask me that?” He asked as he stuck a finger in his face,
“Because,” he said firmly to himself, “you’re the only one in this place.”

“If that’s the truth then I can say whatever should pop into my head,
Any random thought even if only a tangent to the least logical thread.”

“Go ahead and say the craziest things that you’ve ever thought,
The worst that I will ever say of you is that you must be overwrought.”

“Well you should know,” Morton said to himself as he got up and walked away,
“But should we ever meet again, please have something more interesting to say.”
