pencil
by
Phyllis Beckman

must be wooden,
unpainted,
untainted,
(especially) untamed

must be
fashioned in
u.s. of a. (on the continent north of
south america),

must be number two lead
cosied within soft wood
which, when emerging from a sharpener,
is freed of filings with one sharp puff
of poet's breath

must be
especially fond of
unlined day journals, lined dream journals, with
affection saved for formal, no nonsense, yellow legal pads
when it's time to
get down to business

like now,
just as, for instance,
like now....

where did I put my
pencil?

I love that this starts out reading like a single's ad and ends with an out-loud laugh. :)
