"It"
by
George Wentz

I reject it. I will not think of it.
I will not embrace it.
I will not listen to it.
I must turn away from it.

I tell myself to ignore it.
I don't want to feel it.
I am afraid to be near it.
I want to forget it.

It comes to me anyway.
It caresses me in the darkness.
It comforts me in loneliness.
It reassures me when I am scared.

It calms my sensitivity.
It makes me feel safe.
It tells me I am worthwhile.
It is my contentment. I want it.

Thanks for the critique ... I appreciate it. "It" is purposely abstract, leaving to the reader what "it" is, or means. I felt we all have something we want or need to forget, but keeps coming back to nag at us until we realize "it" is something we really don't want to forget. "It" is whatever fits in the reader's life.

We all pursue contentment and when we get it we feel guilty. What is wrong with us?
