The Rose
by
George Wentz

In a distant place
under sunny skies,
a tiny bud swells
in the mother stalk.

The gardener's watchful eyes
and experienced hands
care for the new baby
until it is about to bloom.

Then, it is time
to snip the rose,
pack it carefully,
and send it miles away.

My friend has a bad day,
her eye sheds a tear
because, she says,
no one seems to care.

There, I find the waiting rose
and bring it to her,
hoping to brighten her day
and renew her spirit.

With the rose in her hand,
she knows someone does care --
"Look how far it came,
just for you", I say.
