Handed Down Sacrifice
by

Handed-Down Sacrifice

Step this way.
I’m going to
let go of your hand.
Step this way –
pirouette –
spin and twirl,
bend and swirl,
let the fullness of
your skirt unfurl.
Now, bow your head
to this hard work
of loving
a man –
a child –
the chopping
of vegetables –
hoe weeds from this row.
This is what is yours.
I hand it to you,
my daughter child.
Take this gift
from my weary hand.

Now, smile.

Hi Julianne, I agree. This poem came, I think, because of my work with victims of domestic abuse, women who followed in their mother's footsteps even if they break away from the man who made life miserable, life is nothing but hard work over and over again, learned behavior, thinking this is what I know because I learned it from my mother, at least it's comfortable because I recognize this way to live. It isn't always easy for some women to break free, as I've seen time and time again. Thanks for your comment.

Julianne Carlile:
This is a great poem. I don't like the idea of someone having to sacrifice their life just because their parent did, however. That "following in my footsteps, or else" thing isn't attractive. I think many people would agree.
