Burdens and Blessings: A Villanelle
by
Mike Orlock

Some burdens are too much for one to bear,
relentless weight that bends the back and mind;
like blessings, they are meant for all to share

as proof that someone else just might be there
to lend support and comfort of a kind.
Some burdens are too much for one to bear

alone, without succumbing to despair
and forfeiting to fear what love we find
in blessings that are meant for all to share.

The trials of this world are rarely fair,
the prisons we endure squarely defined.
The burdens are too much for one to bear

without the strength that comes from simple prayer,
made poetry by joy and pain entwined.
Some burdens are just meant for all to bear--
like blessings, they are there for one to share.
