No Poem Today
by
George Wentz

Where has everyone gone?
They must be out flirting with daisies
or swimming with the fishes.
Maybe they floated away in a balloon.

The pen lies where it last fell
on the desktop, no one in the room.
The lamps turned off,
books and papers undisturbed.

No creative thoughts come to mind
while measuring a birdie putt,
or squinting into the sun
to watch the runner on third.

Who will write about today
if licking ice cream cones instead?
Where has everyone gone?
Out gathering words for winter, I guess.
