Peridot
by
George Wentz

Simple and complex
at the same time.
Both common
and rare.

I am Peridot.
Buried within the Earth,
left by comets' tails,
sparkling in ladies' rings.

Greeks said I was
gold stone.
Others said I was
olivine.

My color is yellow,
or green,
or somewhere
in between.

I was named by the French,
a favorite of Cleopatra,
the birthstone of peace
for those born in August.

Like me, Peridot people
seem readily available
but not easily understood.
We are plain and mysterious.

I am strong,
granular,
and lusterous.
I am a precious gem.

Knowing me is good.
Treat me carefully
or I will change color
and fly away.

George Wentz:
Thanks. It was inspired by a dear friend born in August -- a true Peridot -- who indeed flew away.
