On Your Way to Betrothed

On Your Way to Betrothed

Move warily, my dear, through the sweet air
of expectation, stop and breathe,
in your tip-toe trance.

On your way, in the steamy mist of skin,
pull back your shoulders, tip up your chin,
lift your eyes to the clearing of clouds.

Lay it all out, unfold the soft corners, hard
edges, etched dreams splayed before you,
as much as you can do.

Then, piece by piece, gather them bravely
the barbed and beauteous, folded
in their tinges of shadow,
looking well at the undried ink
the permanence of the page.
