"The Talk"
by
James Rogerson

My father gave me "the talk" when I was 21 and ready to get married. He was uncomfortable, and I enjoyed his "suffering". Still he demonstrated his usual succinct grasp of language. For real.

"The Talk"

He is working in the garden.
Beans and squash help him not at all.
He stands and starts toward the house,
Looking like Adam after the fall.

He thinks how he waited too long.
He wanted to do it years ago.
It just seemed like yesterday,
But he knows now he was too slow.

He straightens up, picks up his pace,
So determined to have that talk.
He slows like a condemned man
Who is taking his final walk.

He comes up to his adult son.
They go into the front bedroom.
"We have something to talk about."
He says as if facing his doom.

"You know about men and women?"
"Daddy, all that is understood."
At that he looks greatly relieved.
He stands up to leave and says, "Good."
