Grief You Cannot Touch
by
Angela McClain

Do not try to touch my grief. Stay very far away. When you step close I will recoil. Do not think that you should try.

Do not try to touch my grief. Strangers bring only fear. The outside needs to keep from it. You don’t belong in here.

Do not try to touch my grief. Your hands cause only pain. They scorch my skin just like fire. Numbness is my reprieve.

Do not try to touch my grief. Embraces burden me. Kisses false in their attempts. Body aches though not for you.

Do not try to touch my grief. You keep me from my bed. Soft darkened pillows over my face. My grief does better there.

Do not try to touch my grief. Just stop talking to me. My ears are acheing from your voice. No good will come from it.

Do not try to touch my grief. You can’t grasp, or heal or share. Now I’ve just no need for that. My grief is mine alone.

Do not try to touch my grief. Please just go away. My sweet, sad smile makes you no friend. Don’t call me if you care.

Leave me now, go from my place.

Wretched sickness waits for me.

I’ll crawl to bed in agony

Where I can wish to die.

If morning would only stop coming now.

You’ve have no business here.
