Falling Leaves
by
George Wentz

I watched,
on a calm and sunny October day,
as one by one a leaf would fall
from the treetops high above me.

Some tumbled end over end,
others swayed back and forth,
many simply spiraled downward.
And, one seemed to float motionless.

I watched them fall,
remembering them as spring buds,
then the deep green of summer.
Now, the red and gold of autumn.

Each leaf, as if by intent,
had its own way of saying farewell
as it drifted silently toward the ground,
joining thousands of others already there.

I watched the falling leaves
as a witness in their final moment of glory,
wondering if I too someday
would slip away so peacefully.

Beautiful tribute to the cyclical nature of life, George. Yes, I know you can "slip away" just the same. :~)
