Changing Seasons

A Year in the Hills
by Paula Canup

A blazing sun heats the mountain slopes
Dust blows down steep hills
Billowy clouds mushroom behind tall peaks
The sky darkens.

Thunder echoes through the valley
Rain cascades to earth
Lightening streaks across the sky
Wind blows and creeks swell.

Rain ends suddenly
leaving behind its fragrance
Cooling breezes sway tall pines
granting respite from summer’s heat.

Dark green hills pierce blue skies
Grass grows tall and thick
Wildflowers adorn the meadows
Roses climb rustic fences.

Hummingbirds dive to feed
Lizards sun on rocks
Eagles soar among tall trees
Deer graze in open fields.

The heat loses its intensity
the sun sets lower in the sky.
Greens begin to fade
Gardens wilt and dry.

Goldenrod waves along the roadsides
Sourwood red dances with
yellow maple and
dogwoods’ scarlet berries.

Cornstalks, mums, and pumpkins
decorate roadside stands
Apples entice in every form-
fried pies, cider, and Brown Betty.

Festivals draw crowds from near and far
with bluegrass, funnel cakes, and crafts -
woven scarves, beaded jewelry, carved wood,
pottery, stained glass, and quilts.

Leaves scurry across narrow winding roads,
blanket the ground with gold.
and swirl through cold mountain streams.
Flowers fade.

A harvest moon rises over the mountains,
The air cool and crisp in its soft light.
Squirrels gather fallen acorns
preparing for winter’s chill.

Bright red birds look for seeds
Squadrons of geese fly south
creatures hide in their dens
Quiet descends over all.

Trees form piercing silhouettes
against heavy gray skies
Dark hills stand as tall sentinels
over lonely mountain valleys

Icy wind cuts to the bone
Snow begins to fall
White blankets the earth
reflecting winter sunsets.

Snow-covered mountains glitter
in the cold morning sun
Icicles hang from jutting rocks
Branches pop and crack with the
weight of fallen snow.

The sun’s warmth chases winter’s chill
Melted snow swells rushing streams
Pear trees don their wedding gowns
Yellow forsythia dashes winter’s gloom.

Birds build nests
Newborn fawns and cubs appear
Fish begin to bite
Crickets serenade the night.

Gentle warm breezes bring soft showers
Tender green leaves unfurl on lifeless branches
Farmers till the warming soil and sow their seed
Life comes back again.

The seasons have all come and gone
Another year has passed
As eternal mountains wait and watch
nature’s never-ending show.

I really love this poem. Now where can I go to actually see some of this? I need a vacation! Just kidding. Would love to know where this is, though.
