Reflections of a Corpse
by
Lois Corcoran

I find myself a thoughtful corpse
Reflecting on the life I had.
I'd always been afraid to die
But now I know it's not so bad.

So here I lay all fixed up nice.
A gathering is taking place.
The friends I had and family, too,
Come one by one to see my face.

They say I look so natural.
Morticians really know their stuff.
I tried so hard to get that look
And heaven knows I spent enough.

I hear them say how great I was,
How well I'd lived my life to date.
How come you people never told
me all this stuff before my fate?

The eulogy's a bit too long.
The speaker has a deadpan face.
As funeral's go, this one's the pits.
If I weren't dead, I'd leave this place.

But soon they'll lay me in the ground
Where lovely daffodils will bloom.
I hope no birdies defecate
Upon my unsuspecting tomb.
