Canine Catechism
by
Mike Orlock

Do dogs possess immortal souls
within, such as the ones
we have blessed ourselves with
from a god we call our own?

Do dogs dream of a heaven
that awaits them upon death,
as reward deemed for devotion
which comes natural as breath?

Do dogs require a religion
to give their lives direction,
a dogma to inspire
a need for constant circumspection?

I ask my friend these questions
in the course of our long walk;
his nose extends an answer--
Must I waste his time with talk?
