Black and White
by
Karen Wilson

My husband showed some old home movies
of his daughter as a baby
and momentarily on the screen
the grainy figure of his mother
moved across the corner of the frame
a poignant, accidental glimpse
that brought her alive
to me who’d never met her

moving me to ponder being alive
then alive in memory
then forgotten at last

At my granddaughter’s birthday party
my son taking videos (new equipment, new terms)
Be sure to get some footage of me, I said
Someday you’ll be glad you did

All the past is done and gone as far as we know
Never mind vivid color and digital technology
Jerky, indistinct old movies may be more true
to our inevitable disappearance from view

You did a really nice job of taking what could have easily been a ponderous commentary and tapering it down to a sharp point. I liked it.
