Tonight
by
Jeremiah Schuetter

Tonight I went for a walk in the cold moon dark
My body tired with my mind a spark
All was calm as I took my mark
Upon the empty street of homes and park

Tonight I was calm but felt the worlds alarm
Of pain from suffering
Of death and guns
Of explosive bombs busting
Of cries and pleads for men to see
What they did and did not do
Causing the woman and children haunts that evil spews

Tonight I was calm but now I filled of dreadful worries
For I knew of the horrible chilling flurries
That innocence could not escape
Just as that calm night breeze hit my war heightened senses
with grief that begets belief
that many needed a life's relief

Tonight? What could I do?
Tonight? Where should I go?
Tonight they were all damned without a fan among foes
Tonight their barren realm
swelled with barbarian sounds
Tonight their dust and dirt decayed
Tonight even the place I called home was just as dark as their own

Tonight without the glow from the nightly watchman
Tonight without the protecting ear of a loving pet
that barked and bayed the arrays of seizing shadows
Tonight without the hope of the morning eastern sun
Tonight all they knew was this was it
Tonight their time was now undone

Tonight I could not return to sleep for this my sacred keep
Protect and preserve the precious people of all the world
so they too may not be life marooned

I sighed and pushed out my breath of life
I closed my eyes softly shut tight
Tonight I woke and was far from home
Tonight I looked beyond my own
For I found myself within ancient thrones
Where men and sin rest in place
Where peace escapes each race
Where beauty and laughs have no such face

Tonight I left my love alone
Tonight I loved them as my own
Tonight I felt my worries of home
Tonight I was calm amongst crazed cruel men
Tonight I missed her hand and heart
Tonight I shared their desert moon part

Tonight I fought without regret
Tonight they slept without a fret
Tonight I was doing something more
Tonight with great might and absent were my frights
Tonight they would have never known another sight
Tonight they would have not whispered to say goodnight
