If
by
Mark Lane

If I were a bird I’d fly in the air,
I’d sail along without ever a care.
If I were a fish I’d swim in the sea,
No need to look because that’s where I’d be.

If I were a cat I’d lay in the sun,
I guess for me that would be fun,
If I were a chimp I’d swing in a tree,
I’d eat bananas and drink sweet iced tea.

If I were a bee I’d buzz round a flower,
I’d stay there all day or at least for an hour.
If I were a cowboy I’d ride on my pony,
Out on the range is where you could phone me.

If I were a dog I’d chase after a squirrel,
I’d never catch him but I’d give it a whirl.
If I were an actor I’d be on TV,
I’d want you to look because I’d want you to see.

If I were a spaceman I’d fly to the moon,
I’d bounce over craters all afternoon.
If I were a King I’d make a decree,
And sit on my throne until well after three.

If I were a clown in a circus parade,
I’d wear a flower that squirts pink lemon-aid.
Then everyone there would laugh at me,
And all their hearts would fill with glee.

If I were a soldier I wouldn’t go to war,
I’d join the army that rings bells at the store.
If I were a student I’d earn my degree,
Then I’d be a poet and write poetry.

I’m none of these things but I am your dad,
When we are together it that makes me glad.
If I had my way you’d stay here with me,
And there’s no other place where I’d rather be.

But time has passed and you’re on your own,
I can’t believe how well you have grown.
Come back again whenever you’re free,
I’ve really enjoyed your visit with me.

No, "that" shouldn't be there. I read it a hundred times too.

It's a very nice poem. They must have really liked it. I think you forgot the "apostrophe s" On "it" in the 7th to last line.

One of my favorite things about being a dad was reading bedtime stories to the kids. I miss it. I loved having both of them home for Christmas. So I wrote this for them.
