If I were a bird Iâd fly in the air,
Iâd sail along without ever a care.
If I were a fish Iâd swim in the sea,
No need to look because thatâs where Iâd be.
If I were a cat Iâd lay in the sun,
I guess for me that would be fun,
If I were a chimp Iâd swing in a tree,
Iâd eat bananas and drink sweet iced tea.
If I were a bee Iâd buzz round a flower,
Iâd stay there all day or at least for an hour.
If I were a cowboy Iâd ride on my pony,
Out on the range is where you could phone me.
If I were a dog Iâd chase after a squirrel,
Iâd never catch him but Iâd give it a whirl.
If I were an actor Iâd be on TV,
Iâd want you to look because Iâd want you to see.
If I were a spaceman Iâd fly to the moon,
Iâd bounce over craters all afternoon.
If I were a King Iâd make a decree,
And sit on my throne until well after three.
If I were a clown in a circus parade,
Iâd wear a flower that squirts pink lemon-aid.
Then everyone there would laugh at me,
And all their hearts would fill with glee.
If I were a soldier I wouldnât go to war,
Iâd join the army that rings bells at the store.
If I were a student Iâd earn my degree,
Then Iâd be a poet and write poetry.
Iâm none of these things but I am your dad,
When we are together it that makes me glad.
If I had my way youâd stay here with me,
And thereâs no other place where Iâd rather be.
But time has passed and youâre on your own,
I canât believe how well you have grown.
Come back again whenever youâre free,
Iâve really enjoyed your visit with me.

No, "that" shouldn't be there. I read it a hundred times too.

It's a very nice poem. They must have really liked it. I think you forgot the "apostrophe s" On "it" in the 7th to last line.

One of my favorite things about being a dad was reading bedtime stories to the kids. I miss it. I loved having both of them home for Christmas. So I wrote this for them.
