cardinal rule
by
Phyllis Beckman

cheer, cheer!
she orders,
sternly
from on high,

her feathers
camouflage
in the bare branches
above,

don't make me
come down there!

We have two pair of Cardinals that live in our backyard. In the summer, one of the males will sit in our bedroom window and sing until my wife gets up and feeds them.
