Another Yesterday
by
John Marshall

Seems like only yesterday
You ignored my advance
Me standing there like a fool
Trying to make small-talk
You not wanting to be bothered

But I remember well
Your laugh as we walked
Your hand in mine
Through fields of spring
With flowers in your hair

Seems like only yesterday
We vowed to each other
Ourselves
Before God and man

And I remember well
Your sleeping face when the sun
Peeked through the uncovered sash
And kissed your eyelids until
They fluttered open with surprise
Then warmth as we burrowed
Once again beneath the covers.

And was it just today
We shuffled through autumn leaves
Slowly like patient lovers
Trying to make the moment last

I seem to remember
Pausing by the still lake
as we looked into each other’s eyes--
Eyes of remembrance--
A spiraling leaf fell from the sky
And touched your shoulder
Before completing its final journey

“Worry not,” you said,
“for tomorrow
This will be another yesterday.”
