What Seaweed is to Orkney Sheep.
by
gerard coughlan

Seaweed is,
To Orkney sheep,
Vague writing
Issued from the Deep.

It comes
In the Dark conspiracy of Night
And festoons the rocks
Pre glint of light.

Is it a code from other isles:
The Hebrides or Samburgh Head
A chilling warning
Of the restless Dead?

Or perhaps,
The straggle is the language of Love
Sent by lonely sheep
Near Heartbreak Cove.

Whatever the reason
For the mysterious visitation
The Orkney Sheep
Are full of contemplation !
