Noah's Drawer
by
Sharon Kelly

Tucked away in a chest of drawers, the memories smell of wood grain.

Small clothes, folded neatly, with love and care.

It was the best that I could do.

Alone, I hold your tiny shirt against my face. Closing my eyes, I breathe deeply.

I can smell your scent again. You are warm, and fresh, and near.

How I wish I could dress you one more time. Please, God, just one more time.

And after I dressed you, I would rub my face against your blond head.

Your hair would tickle my lips, and you would press your face against my shoulder.

Your shirt is damp with my silent tears.

I fold it neatly, with love and care, and return it to its resting place.

It is the best that I can do.

A well crafted poem. I like the repetition of the line mid-way and at the end, "it is the best that I can do." Along with the descriptive passages it holds a wealth of feeling that I can identify with.
