EARTHQUAKE OF EMOTIONS
by
Mary Graziano

EARTHQUAKE OF EMOTIONS

Emotions running wild
Tearing you up inside,
Churning like the oceans
Pressure building deep within
Emotions tense,
Like an earthquake
No release, the rumblings
And shifting of the earth
Creates the same intenseness
In our own feelings.

Tension builds,
Slowly erupting inside,
Our minds seeing
Hues of emotions,
Dark blues, resembling
The sky, ready
To take on the darkness,
Electrifying oranges
Yellows, mixing with
Tension, collaborating together.

The earth opens up
With force, swallowing
Everything in its path,
Our emotions play
The same role,
We are consumed
By feelings too intense
Racing through our minds,
Sometimes not able
To unscramble our thoughts.

Eventually, the earth reconciles
Stillness filters
Through the air,
The aftermath
Shows much devastation
That is left behind,
Our own impact can
Also be devastating
If we can’t control the
Destructive emotions inside.

Mother Nature
Relaxes her hold,
You also can
Disengage from your
Emotions and feelings,
Breathe deep, release
All tension felt,
Freedom can now enter
You are no longer in the
Earthquake of emotions.

This line hits home for me "We are consumed By feelings too intense". I sometimes feel "consumed" by my emotions. However, I've learned [over the years] way's of keeping them "in check". Well done!

While I really like the idea of using natural disasters as an analogy to one's emotions, I don't feel the analogy works consistently and logically in this piece. Example: It's hard to envision how tense emotions can be compared to an earthquake which suggests rather the release of these emotions. (first stanza). The poem is too long for the idea(s) it conveys.

That was very good and powerful, I liked how you compared emotions to natural disasters. Some of the lines you used, too, we're spot on in describing exactly how those emotions feel, well done!
