Upon Waking
by
Brenda Cole

The people cry, the people weep
When the horrid news hits the streets
Lied to and cheated, they troll about defeated
Forsaking all civility, ignorance repeated.

Used and abused this planet, our home
Upon her crust we once did roam
From our eyes the tears must fall
Lamenting " how has this happened, we've ruined it all ! "

If only we'd noted when ponds turned up dry
If only we'd acted when mother earth cried
We should have done better, we could have all cared
There'd still be a place that we could all share

Alas we neglected to heed her warnings
Until one day we woke to no morning
The sky stayed dark as the birds awakened
And to their core the world was shaken

Without the sun, life here will wilter
No longer she'll be viewed through rose colored filter
Remove thy blinders and gaze upon reality
Unless we change, man has reached his finality.
