Autumn Spice
by

Autumn Spice

In bolder-strewn
nature preserves
we bask in cascades of swirling vermillion
while muscled hawks in their seasonal
rite of passage
cruise invisible updrafts

we tilt our faces to the chill wind
the sun
and the hawks
at our feet an abundance of softly
gleaming acorns in jaunty caps
to ornament a tapestry that whispers
in russet hue

my mother and her father recite poetry
in their wind-worn jackets
tell stories

but most of all
the double layer spice cake
eaten in the cool crisp air
tasting of round nutmeg sunshine
and the full autumn clove of leaves
baked in the early morning shadow
blue of our row house
with its narrow kitchen
and non-existent counter space

This poem has some really lovely pictures. I had to read it several times before I could work out where some good old-fashioned full-stops and commas - should ( perhaps better to say _would-) be. It would have made a better 'read' for me. But it is a good poem.
