I would - if I could
by
Rhona Aitken

Looking back - far back -
the thoughts that linger
don't crowd my aged
mind with pride.
Such thoughts are
roughly tossed aside
by insistant waves
of insipient guilt.

Those I love the most
suffered most.
Love can blunder
unerringly upon those
whose lives we treasure.
If I could only say
how much I rue
those failings I would.
If only I could.
