MY ANCESTRY
by
James Given

The almost opaque flowers off – set

Only by their respective
Minimally Luminous hews

Gravitating as
They find themselves
Leaning toward the children
Lounging in the grass

Under the Sycamore Tree
That has grazed
In our back yard

Predating my great grandmother’s
Exuberant entrance
Into this world

Or was it her traverses
Between Warsaw, Poland
To the enclaves of New York
Through Ellis Island

Dogs in the neighborhood
Bark out the letters of the day

Confirming that empathetic love
Trumps passion in lieu of lust
Not forgetting however

That there is always another day.
