Opening Exercises 1962
by
Joseph Hughes

We read the Bible every day
In public school, before the flag
Preeminent in honored placement
Setting our hearts towards heaven’s graces
The Lord is my Shepherd I shall …
Will save us from the fires of Hell
High atop with lofty view
Our city below under cobalt blue
‘Neath winter sky and smokestack steam
The sunrise splits as if a dream
The school bell rings, a klaxon call
For hand-cupped faces in the hall
Side by side our common breath
Walking through the valley, the shadow of death
