Sailing by Heart
by
Linda Golden

The sea waits for me, calm now in port, the slosh gentle against the hull;
she sets sail at six, an hour before sunset, billowing sheets set just so to snap
smartly as she spins about and heads for open water.

Wish list from long ago, to cruise Greek Isles under sweeps of canvas fluttering
in the setting sun, sounds of circling seagulls mix with the music from the ship,
Vangelis 1492 Suite sends us on our way.

The list of the bow sends a thrill through my body as I find my sea legs, the roll of the
ocean will rock me to sleep tonight; for now, we put on our neon orange life vests, find
our muster stations, making faces as we take pictures of each other

She's a sleek vessel, five masts march along blonde wooden slatted deck, holding a few
hundred souls, longing for adventure, willing to brave unforseen weather, shifting seas;
happy for company, glad for pockets of solitude

I savor every moment of my 'trip of a lifetime', each small detail wonder-filled,
ship, ports staff, fellow passengers. We dance on the deck in the moonlight. Next day
my husband and I stand at the dark wood rail waiting for Santorini to come into view.

We climb switchbacks to the top where the town perches, dodging donkeys
stopping often to catch our breath. We come to the overlook arms entwined, gaze
back at our floating white apparition, realizing the most extraordinary part of this
journey is that we are here together
