Unveiling Linda Golden
by
Linda Golden

Who decides when we come to our end
Some know, when it is by their own hand
Others feel it approach as a whisper announcing the denouement
Still many are caught by surprise, stopped mid-sentence, mid- heartbeat

You left quietly, exhaling your essence as you reached your hand to eternity
Still warm when I kissed your sweet brow, prayed for your safe journey
We walked you ashes to the lagoon of your choosing
Watched your powdery self float, cried to the tune of crashing waves

How many times this year have I caught muself reaching for the phone
To share as brother and sister do, watching my outstretched hand freeze
Miss you at little moments, they bounce off my sore heart, echo in my
Mind's eye, skitter as a chill across shoulders, tricle wet down cheeks

Survivors guilt shadows me, catching me off guard
Whenever I lament the complications of life
Sometimes I wallow with it in sadness or drop into depression
Other times I grab for life with two hands, one for each of us

We need to find a new way to mark the first year's passing
Ritual unveling of tombstones no longer valid in cremation's wake
We will gather in your honor and remember how bright your light shone
Share the sorrow of your passing and the hole it left in our lives

Your kindness reminded me of our Mom, your playfulness lit up the room
When you danced the panther in you came alive, music played even as you left
Loving your family was your first priority, your three kids thrived under your care
Being a grandpa the joy of your life, being a good partner a mission

We were privileged to walk with you in this life
Unvelied is the permanent place you occupy in our hearts

Just read it again. It is a very beautiful poem. Does anyone ever comment on these 'open mike' poems? If they don't they should.
