Ode to Ash Trees
by
Phyllis Beckman

You who shade our mortgaged home
Trio of strength and might
Threatened by a foreign bug
You'll disappear from sight

No one knows when you will fall
With a resounding Thwack
But you are doomed to leave us
Trunk, bark, leaves, branches, crack

The emerald ash borer's beauty
Conceals it's deadly vice
To destroy lofty ash trees
They don't even think twice

I contemplate your absence
Anticipate your crash
I had to write this poem
I Ode it to the Ash
