Southern Breeze
by
Judith Hartberg

Like a lilting southern breeze
you floated through my life.
Like the lilac in my garden
a brief season’s pleasure only.
A dancing mote of sunlight
you flickered and were gone.

As introverted as I was, you
transposed me to another key,
all up and down the scale;
it was no simple feat.
We were laughing, dancing
in and out of tune
all through the carefree days.
You even had me grooving to
a downtown beat.

And many days since then
a thought of you goes
dancing through my mind.
You were all of this and more
leaving all my insides on my outsides;
lilacs pale and falling lifted for
a moment by a flirting summer breeze.

REFRAIN:

Lilacs brown and gently strewn
upon the ground, quick silver moments,
like that southern breeze are gone,
like that southern breeze are gone.

Read it again and liked it even more. I even liked the Refrain. But why a Refrain? Curious!
