My small dog waits in the grass
For me to hurry up.
He needs to keep me in sight
And that's hard on a pup.

He likes to chase things that move
And sometimes things that don't.
Most things I want him to do,
Well, you can guess--he won't.

And yet I love him dearly;
He needs me more than most,
Cuz if he didn't have me
He'd probably be toast.

But I did change it from "He likely would be toast" to the above. Now I'm worried.

Usually people laugh at the last line.

cute. :) while it struck me strangely at first, i like that your verse and rhyme scheme 'match' a cute little dog. i would love to see a stanza with some physical descriptors, from hair style and color to what kind of wagging tail he's got... I'm left wanting an image of his particular cute.
