Can You Hear Me, Fred?
by
Donal Mahoney

We’re equal we agree
in the eyes of someone
Fred says isn’t there
and I say is

and we agree
only after death
will we know
who’s right so

no use now
making any bets.
And we agree
that if he’s right

the matter’s closed
and if I’m right
and I don’t see him
anywhere around

I’ll shout and hope
he can hear me.
In the meantime
we'll have a beer.
