Button Box Moment
by
Phyllis Beckman

Needing to find three buttons
to expand the waistband of
a petite size 10 skirt,
I reach onto the top shelf
for mom's dusty button box.
I momentarily caress the box,
actually an old round tin
purchased by an ancestor
with an eye for its contents...
fruitcake, perhaps, or mixed nuts, a cheese round
which became a container for generations of buttons.
Uncounted generations of
frugal grandmothers, greats and great-greats
gently clipping buttons
from their precious frocks before
lovingly refashioning them into school clothes for their children,
later for their children's children,
were unaware that on January l6,
2011, I'd discover three matching magenta
buttons to expand
the wool tweed waistband of
my chic three piece suit
from the local
Goodwill.

We're all just a collection of buttons sitting in an old tin in a dark corner of a hallway closet. Very good.

I have known two button boxes. My mom's and my wife's. Each had buttons from people and clothing that pre-dated us. I always wondered about who might have worn them and where did they go. Thank you for making me remember.
