Let go
by
Lou Raio

down the cold and lonely road again
whizzing by without the realization of the many who traveled here
how many souls have encountered this particular place?
did they stop to soak in the emptiness?
or did they just drive by oblivious.
how many times have I been here?
how many times must I come before I learn another route?
I honestly don’t know if I want to avoid this path.
I don’t need to cut myself to know what a sharp edge feels like, but I just might.
some of us flee from pain, others know no other reality.
no matter what we are joined.
whether it be running from or running to pain
it’s clear where our mindset lays.
all the happiness in the world could be at our fingertips yet we thrive around pain.
after all, even those who preach love will do anything to win you over even if it kills you.
and down the road we go.
some scream by while others sightsee
despite the countless casualties piled on the shoulder.

The questions are very powerful. The lines in "first person" are the most effective....I feel like a companion on the road when you share yourself "in the moment". Mmmmm....think a bit about the title...it is good advice, but it is not what the poem is about. (in my opinion, of course....you are the best editor of your work)
