I am white
by
Ellen Rammell

I am white.
I did not choose to be white
It was the way I was born.
I am not proud of being white,
But I am not ashamed either.
It is just the way I am.
I am tall too.
I did not choose to be tall,
It was the way I grew.
I wish I was not so tall.
My short sister wishes she was taller,
Then she could reach the groceries on the top shelf.
Her husband is short too.
They must need help shopping.
At least she is beautiful.
I am not beautiful,
But I am not ugly either.
And I have a great personality.
You cultivate that, when you are not beautiful.
I did not choose to be not beautiful,
In fact, I would have preferred to be a great beauty.
No one chooses to be short, or tall, ugly or beautiful.
Or white.
It is just the way you are.
How can you be proud or ashamed over things that just happen?
Here is what makes me proud:
I am an American. I chose that.
I am a nurse. I chose that too.
I am a Christian. I chose that many years ago.
My husband (of 31 years) loves me. Marriage is hard work.
I have friends who love me too. Friendship is not always easy.
I am informed on national and world events.
I care about the pain of others.
But I do not care if you are:
Beautiful
Or short
Or white
Or not white.
They were never your choices.
Or mine.

I would beg to differ. I believe that we all choose those things before we were born. I do however really like your poem and see what you are saying.
