We Were One
by
Sunny Martin

Serene, with lovely dark, wavy hair
Her face holds certainty of a promising future.
Motherhood becomes her as
She holds her first born child.

Curly mop of hair, sweet smile,
Chubby hand stretched out in welcome
The little one, a clean slate
Upon which life will write

They are one, together from conception.

In the big yard by the tall elm
Smiling painfully into the camera
She stands with the others
Pretending to give away her first born child.

Curly hair covered with a veil,
Happy smile, she stands beside her husband
A new journey embarked
Upon which life will write.

They are one, together from conception.

She sits in joy beside her husband
Half a century of love and pain
Surrounded by generations
And sharing it all with her first born child

Who standing beside her husband
Beams her own smile
Of love and happiness
To share this special time.

They were one, together from conception

Now she lies in stillness
Amid all those she loved
She is very gently covered
By her very own first born child

I stand beside her coffin
Her blanket in my hand
I kiss her softly, my heart is breaking
As I cover her one last time.

We were one, from the moment of conception.
