Sam-ancipation
by
Mike Orlock

I am free!
Free from the tyranny of tiny feet!
Free from the oblong obstruction
that lies like a log along the length of me
as I try to sleep--
Free of the stretch and scratch
that wakens me at any hour--
Free of the nose and nudge,
the paw and poke,
that pulls me from slumber
as if I were still tethered to a leather lead
even here
Here under the sanctity of my covers,
compelled to follow
whim and whimsy of woof and waggle…

I am free--
Free at last!
Of snort and snuggle
of lap and lick
of dream and dribble
of yawn and yip
of curl and cuddle
of groan and gape
of the whole morning ritual
by which Sam wakes and waits
and watches and waits
(on me)
until finally
Finally
he slides from the bed
and I am free…

…for the moment
until he demands to be
taken out and fed.
