Long Island Winter
by
Toni Brackeen

Gray day; thirty-five degree rain
My bones are shivering, my nose is crying cold
It's enough to make me trudge
Enough to make me old

Opened one eye, sun took the day off
Teakettle steams the window pane
Cold floor scolding my feet
Gray day; thirty-five degree rain

Walking in the afternoon, it's icy on my head
I feel my hands seek warm refuge
Into pockets, toes are cringing
From this semi-frozen deluge

Gray day; thirty-five degree rain
Sky grows darker, streetlights glow
The drainpipe out my window chatters loudly
And in my bed I hope and pray for snow
