Beckoning Winds and Sea
by
Annie Jenkin

Next

I’m watching the river mist
roll away with the tide
and parades of seagulls
are combing for crabs and cockles
plucking at rocks for mussels

The wind whips through the boatyard
ruffling wires and pulleys
tapping tall metal masts
like children all chattering at once

Sails run ahead of the wind
skimming the ocean
flicking over blues and greys
of rainbows hidden in sea spray
scattering its petticoats over the waves

Annie Jenkin worked as an emergency nurse, then in a university setting, so she says there wasn't a lot of time for poetry until 2014. Since then, though, she’s gotten serious about writing. Living in a beautiful part of the United Kingdom, where she enjoys walking in the countryside and by the coastline, provides much inspiration. Annie's poetry has appeared in several journals and anthologies.

This powerful picturesque poem captures the spirit of the sea. I can see the river mist roll away the tide, the wind whipping through the boatyard, the sails scattering its petticoats over the waves. I love the unique metaphors of "children chattering all at once" and "rainbows hidden in seaspray."
